Section around the pump house now a separate bike lane rather than the sidewalk

The trail use to run along the narrow sidewalk from the Pump House to the bottom of the Waterfront exit. The trail now has a separate lane along the river side of the street. It has two way bicycle traffic and is protected from the automotive traffic

Update Duquesne to Waterfront

As of June 10, 2011 the trail from Duquesne to Waterfront is now open and complete. This completes the trail from DC/Cumberland to the Waterfront at Homestead, PA

McKeesport to Duequesne:
The trail is open from the west end of the Industrial Park in McKeesport to Duequesne.

Flyover status:
As of Nov 2009 all the property issues have been resolved. The subdivision deeds have been recorded. The bridge has been engineered, designed, and the contract to construct it has been let. Track time (no trains) has been scheduled for the week of July 5 to move the bridge from where it is being built on the ground to over the tracks. Note: This does not mean that this section of trail will be complete on July 12th. The permits and contracts for the approach are not yet done.

Monongahela Wharf open:
This section of trail was officially opened Nov 16. It includes a very nice path along the river edge, boat tie-ups, heart plants and a flood-resistant infrastructure. Currently (Nov 2009) the only access is via the parking lot ramp at the corner of Fort Duquesne Blvd and Wood Street.

Point Park closed:
Access to the fountain is currently (Nov 2009) unavailable. They are renovating the side walk and paths along the river front. Access to the park is only from in front of the Hilton Hotel.

Updated Whitaker Railroad Flyover status

The railroad flyover bridge at Whitaker, just south of the Rankin Bridge, is in the design phase. The engineering contract has been let, and the engineers are working on the design. (4 Oct 2008)

Updated Sandcastle negotiation status

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Kennywood/Sandcastle President Peter J. McAneny today announced they have made significant progress to accommodate the Great Allegheny Passage on Sandcastle property". See the PR release on the county web site. But note: "Many of the details, including the final alignment of the trail, must still be resolved." (3 Oct 2008). See the Post-Gazette article dated 4 Oct 2008.

Allegheny Trail Alliance says: "We can enjoy McKeesport and the Riverton Bridge, after the 4th, but there is no trail for public use past the Duquesne side of the bridge"
The concrete paving machine on the ramp was within 40 feet of the end. The decking on the bridge appeared to be within one span of the end.(25 Sept)

The ramp to the bride is progressing. All the structural steel is in place. The concrete forms are there,along with all the rebar. The concrete paving machine is in place and ready to go

On the bridge they are in the process of laying stringers over the ties, and then placing a wooden deck on top of the stringers. Looks like about half of the decking is done. Railing missing on one side, construction railing on the other side. On the ramp to the bride it looks like most the structural steel is in place. Still working on the final section that connects to existing bridge. Most of the concrete forms are there, about half of the rebar is in place, and they are placing the rest of the rebar.
